During my sophomore year, I decided I would like to drop out of medical school for a semester in order to work in the upcoming North Carolina governor's race. I approached Dr Stead with my rather foolish request.

He looked off into space for a prolonged time, as only he can do, and said, "Mr. Taylor, some students need only three years to finish medical school and others require five. I guess you're one of those who requires five."

My plans dissolved when my parents learned of my foolishness. I finished in four years.
